Recruiting or staffing firms work with companies to help them find top talent to fit their needs and roles. Sometimes these roles are confidential and only posted through the recruiter. So when you use a staffing firm, you may find opportunities you didn’t see online before! Not only is this a perk, but working with someone who knows your exact needs and wants in a career can better your search. It never hurts to get a little help, the job search can be time-consuming, especially when already employed.

This resource is often overlooked! College alumni career service centers are a great tool to use when on the job search. Whether you’re a recent graduate or have years under your belt, the alumni career services will always have something available. If you’re seeking a job near your college, this is one of the best resources to use. Typically they are local positions, teaming up with a local school. Like a recruiter, the counselors at the career service center can help guide you and are there for advice when you need it.
One of the most common, but dreadful, job search resources is networking events. Yes, they can seem intimidating, but getting out there and meeting people face to face is one of the most sure-fire ways to make connections. You can search for local events online or in advertisements. Some are generic, but some are even catered to specific industries! Networking events are an opportunity to meet new people versus directly applying for a job, so be sure that you aren’t pushing to get hired. Meeting people is the stepping stone. You never know who they may know that can help you down the road or may be able to put in a good word for you.
Similar to networking events, professional organizations can be a great way to meet new people that could lead you to the career you’re looking for. Professional organizations or associations are typically industry focused and host chapters and events all over the nation. Becoming a part of one is a great way to meet other fellow industry professionals and hone your focus. American Marketing Association and the American Advertising Federation are just a few.
