Tax season – you’re likely either rolling your eyes or smiling at the thought. Regardless, it must be done. In this blog, we’ve compiled a list of all your tax needs, including friendly reminders, documents needed, and even trusted places to file.

The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) has announced the onboarding of more than 4,000 new customer service representatives who are being trained to assist with technical account management as well as understanding and respecting taxpayer rights. Additionally, the IRS encourages you to refrain from filing too early to avoid an amended return.

If a majority of your income was received from contract work, you would need a W-2 from each employer. For example, if you completed 5 contracts in 2022, with 5 different employers, you should obtain 5 W-2s. A helpful tip:

Keep an Excel or Word doc. tracker throughout the year as a reminder of the documents needed come tax time. (i.e., W-2(s), 1099, deductions)

Here is a list of documents you will need come tax season (as they pertain to you):

  • Social Security documents
  • Income statements
    • W-2, W-2G (gambling winnings)
    • 1099-R (distributions from pension, annuity, IRA, etc.)
  • Tax forms that report other types of income
    • MISC-1099 (foreclosure, dividends, and distributions, unemployment income, proceeds from the sale of property, social security benefits, etc.)
  • Tax deduction
    • 1098 (Mortgage Interest Statement), 1098-T (Tuition statement), and 1098-E (interest paid on a student loan), etc.
  • Expense receipts
    • Charitable contributions, IRA contributions, Medical bills, etc.

There are 3 ways to file your taxes: by mail, via website, or using a tax preparer. Your tax needs will determine which filing route best suits you. For example, if you are an independent with little to no income statements, expenses, or deductions, a trusted website may best suit your needs. We like Turbo Tax and HR Block. If you own a business, have multiple deductions or expenses, or simply would rather have a human file your taxes, a tax preparer may best suit you. They will ensure you are properly filing your taxes and receiving the best return possible.

If you have not received your required documents by early- to mid-March, be sure to follow up with the necessary parties to obtain your documents ASAP. The deadline for filing 2022 taxes is April 18, 2023.
