Leadership is defined as ‘the action of leading a group of people or organization’. This can be interpreted in several ways, though we believe the true meaning of leadership goes far beyond the surface. In November 2021, a recorded 4.5 million U.S. workers quit their jobs and poor leadership is believed to be a contributing factor. In a time of perpetual change, people are clinging to those willing to pave the way to a brighter, more steadfast future. In this blog, we will dissect 6 key components of leadership that we believe to be amongst the most important in creating an environment that your employees will actually want to be a part of.

L – Loyal

As a leader, you need to be just as loyal (if not more loyal) to the mission as those who follow. A person’s loyalty to the success and completion of company goals vs. their leaders should not be in question. The second your employees feel that they care more than you, you’ve lost them. Their success and happiness equal your success and happiness so proving your loyalty should be at the top of your to-do list. Stick with them through the good, the bad and the ugly and they will be sure to provide you with the same in return.

E – Energetic

The energy you bring as a leader will set the tone for others to follow. If you come to work each day slumped over, barely making it to 5 o’clock, you can expect your employees will follow your lead. We’ve all heard the saying, “treat others as you want to be treated,” correct? Well, in this case, you should, “carry yourself how you want others to carry themselves.” Think of your employees as your younger sibling who mimics your every move. They will like to do as they see done. Keep your energy upbeat and they will follow.

A – Agile

If there is anything the past couple of years have shown us, it is that everything can change in the blink of an eye. As a leader, it is your duty to respond to change and execute new strategies that can adapt to non-linear uncertainties. In layman’s terms, if you freak out, they’ll freak out. It is likely that as the world around us continues to change and evolve, your employees will fire questions your way, and if you have answers to those questions, you will ease their minds tremendously. Happy workers, happy life, right?

D – Decisive

To piggyback on agility, decisiveness will also greatly improve your employees’ trust in you. More often than not, people are just looking for answers, and if you don’t have the answers, find them. It is nearly impossible to please everybody but if you are diligently making decisions for the good of your employees and your business it is likely the majority will win. If you are ever in a position where you don’t know what decision will best suit your employees don’t be afraid to ask. Everybody loves to feel heard.

E – Ethical

As a leader, manager, or whatever title you may possess, it is your job to foster an ethical environment. A recent survey showed that over 75% of workers would consider a company’s culture prior to applying, and over 60% of workers care more about culture than salary. Be honest with your employees and remain confidential where necessary. If you are speaking badly about an employee (previous or current) to another employee then what makes them think you will not do the same to them? Always keep it professional.

R – Recognize

Everybody loves a good pat on the back. Whether it’s something as little as thanking someone for showing up on time that day or simply thanking them for all the hard work they do every day. Public praise is also a good way to let your other employees know what achievements or behaviors are valued within your workplace. Something that might take you seconds to do will carry much greater effects into the future.

As we said, these are just a few of the qualities it takes to be an effective leader. In this case, the juice is well worth the squeeze.
